Star trek postcard: tribbles!!

I just can't get enough of these lovelies from the Star Trek Postcard Box by Chronicle Books. I just love these things. I worry that they will be discontinued soon. (I don't know if it's a valid worry, I just worry a lot.) This gem features a still from the legendary "Troubles with Tribbles" episode. The line is a quote from the episode, which deals with the invasive (but adorable) tribbles.

More than one Postcrossing account: what do you think?

Last week I sent this postcard to someone in Germany. It arrived in 6 days: awesome. Then yesterday another German address came up... and it was to the same name at the same address! Wait a minute, I thought this wasn't supposed to happen on Postcrossing? Lo and behold, it was the same person with a different account.

I've heard that people do create multiple Postcrossing accounts - I guess to get around the limits on how many postcards they can send? Initially I felt sort of cheated, like - hey, I just sent a postcard to this guy! But I pondered it a bit further, and figured he's really enthusiastic about postcards, and he clearly cares enough to register them quickly. He also has a full, robust profile, and has had both accounts for nearly a year with around 200 postcards sent and received in each. So why not send to someone who's really enthusiastic and will register immediately?

One of the things I love about Postcrossing is the serendipity, so I did feel taken aback to be assigned to send a postcard to the very same person basically one day after he registered the first one. In that sense, having multiple accounts is sort of cheating the system. But I'll admit I have often toyed with the idea of opening a second Postcrossing account myself - my username there long predates this blog, so it is not Missive Maven. Something always holds me back from doing it, though; I guess it's a combination of some weird sense of ethics plus really wanting to keep all my stats in one place. Under my current account, I am allowed to have 15 postcards at once, and the way it works out, I usually end up sending one new one a day.

I've got a postcard traveling in the USA right now that's been traveling for 40 days and the recipient hasn't logged into Postcrossing for a month, so I am pretty well prepared for that one to expire... and then there are all the postcards that get sucked up into that giant country on another continent that has a poor track record, in my experience, with postcards actually arriving or getting registered. So I've had the max number traveling and, again, I've been tempted to make that second account. I'm now repeating myself, so I'll just stop and ask for your feedback:

Beautiful Cypress Gardens...

Wait, southern belles are part of a natural fairyland? Guess so! Love it for the kitsch factor, doubly so because I've had a spate of southern belles in my mailbox lately (in fact, someone even commented on the last postcard like this that it looked like Cypress Gardens), complete with those oddball pouffy dresses. I know, they're not oddball for the time and the place, but they strike me as extremely comical now. (I'm a no-nonsense midwestern girl cum plane-jane New England transplant. Wearing a dress like that would be antithetical to my very nature.)

A few of my correspondents just send me the coolest vintage postcards. I laughed at this one for a long time. Love the Lusterchrome color!

Unicorn wishes! + Cornify

I'm not sure how I learned about this stationery, but I found out about it before the release date and was actually eagerly anticipating its availability. Presenting Unicorn Wishes! from Chronicle Books. Unicorns + rainbows = nostalgic kitsch & happyland for me.

I confess: I did succumb to the unicorn craze when I was a little girl. I loved 'em. I still kind of get a giggle from them. (If you want a SERIOUS giggle, check out the super-kitschy Cornify.com, "the #1 unicorn and rainbow service." Go ahead - you know you want to.)



Only the little mushroom sticker on the back of the envelope came with the set; the sparkly hearts and combo unicorn/rainbow pegasus (wtf?) came from my own private collection. I think they add a whole new level of cornification here.



Again the Chronicle Books website rather fails us, because you only get to see the back of ONE of the lovely stationery sheets (shown on the Unicorn Wishes! page here). I should photograph this in more depth soon - it is full of splendid wonders. Who knows - maybe YOU'LL get a unicorn wish in your mailbox.

These are so deeply awesome.

I love decorative fold-and-mails in part because the envelopes end up looking so cool, but the Star Trek set is particularly kitsch-tastic.

There is one with Captain Kirk amongst the tribbles.... someday I must post a photo of that one, too.
