A clean desk encourages letter writing

I cleaned my desk today!

It seems like everything has been a mess in my life lately. The last two weeks of October were just incredibly rough, with mostly unexpected things... the latter of which was that I've gotten a nasty flu and have been sick for nearly two weeks, sicker than I've been in years. So things piled up, including letters and mail, and I barely had the energy to get anything done. My desk got messier than it's been in ages! I'm not a neat freak, but I firmly believe that a clean and organized desktop makes for a more inviting workspace... and it was such a mess before that I didn't even want to look at it, let alone write letters at it!

Freshly cleaned desk

Tonight I sort of started to get my energy back, and I cheered myself up considerably by cleaning my desk. The piles are still daunting, but at least the writing space is cleared and all my tools are organized.

Soda's desk job: postcard duty

Naturally, moments after I settled into writing a Postcrossing postcard to Japan, Soda had to jump on up to be a part of the action.

Soda in the limelight

She appreciates the clean desk, too - now there's room for her to stretch out there again!

Sorry for my lack of posts, and my severe lack of mail output... it's been a bad month, but I think I am on the upswing. I did manage a lot of postcards in October - 50! - but only wrote 12 letters. I'm hoping to do a little better in November.

  1. you are so right, miss' maven. this has really struck a chord with me - my desk has been chronically messy, it's inhibiting. i hereby swear to make that my mission this evening. i love the lattice behind the desk to pin things on. i wonder if we have any lattice-y thing hanging around in the scrap piles? i shall investigate. thanks for the inspiration lovely! and i send you my wishes for getting better, you poor dear. xx

  2. Lots of envy - for the clean desk, and Soda supervising. I've had massive busy-ness of late work-wise, with the final big push this weekend presenting at a conference. So I'm looking forward to desk cleaning and letter writing/Mail Art on Monday!!!! Our sweet Tika (RIP) wasn't big on sitting on the desk, always preferring to sit on my lap instead - so posture wasn't the greatest, but always worth it with the love bug :D.
Thanks for the great post. Be well.

  3. Very inviting spot to write letters. And that pen case. All I can say is Wow. Are they all inked & ready to write with? Some day I hope to have a large case like that - looks like it would make choosing & using pens so much easier having them in one convenient case instead of in several small cases. :-) ~ Jan

  4. I completely agree...it is easier to write a letter when the desk is clean. The trouble is, as soon as I start a letter project, the desk becomes messier and messier. Then later it takes so much effort to clean the desk again that I need a "break" after tidying before I can write again. When I cook, I'm quite good at tidying up as I go along, but somehow not when I'm writing. Love the idea of the pen folder in your photos. I imagine it's easier to keep pens tidy if each has its own place somewhere, instead of just being piled in a drawer, like I do. Or maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to spend more money on stationery. In any case, thanks for the post and get well soon.

  5. I hope you get well soon! You only wrote 12 letters? Wow, that's many, I think. :) But you have definitely more penpals than me.

I agree, a clean desk encourages letter writing. My desk is messy at the moment (oops).

  6. Thanks for all the comments and well wishes, folks! For those who commented about the pen case, I did a post about it a while back. More info there. Yes, it is a marvelous thing for organizing fountain pens. My other pens (gel pens, glitter pens, etc) live in other places! :-) Lady D, the lattice is part of this room, and one of the reasons why I decided to put the desk there; there are stairs up to the kitchen right behind it. The cats can sit on the platform behind my desk and look at me as I'm writing (occasionally they do meow through there), as it is almost the same level as the desk.

  7. If only I could write 50 and 12! Such an inspiration. As for the clean desk... If I could find mine I could clean it! But alas it is completely covered...

  8. Sorry to read you have been down with the flu. Feel better soon. And try not to worry about your letter writing output. These things ebb and flow....and it should be fun and not stressful. Take care.

  9. Now see what you've done? I took a look at the other page about your pens, that you mentioned. And someone mentioned Platinum Preppies. And I had to buy one, didn't I?! *facepalm* I ordered a nice purple one and it's already been dispatched, so I'll probably get it tomorrow. So that's another pen in my collection. Thank you so much. :-)

  11. Don't you just love how cats will plop on a desk - espcially when you are trying to use it! Love your desk and your blog! Just found it. I will be back! :)
